Mentality No. 8 - Gula Matari by JOMAD & ANDREW, 2025

Public Collection

No. 8 is a special part of the Mentality series. A large-scale Kobe portrait finds its way into one of the most progressive and radical universities in France: Université Paris 8

Artist-duo JOMAD & ANDREW were commissioned to paint a monumental-sized mural within one of the Saint-Denis campus buildings. Featuring a number of influential figures recognized internationally for their contributions to culture, literature and politics, the mural showcases the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Aung San Suu Kyi, Malala Yousafzai, Hélène Cixous, César Chávez, Martin Luther King, Jr., Fatou Diome, Harvey Milk, Agnès Varda, DJ Mehdi and Kery James.

The mural's title pays homage to 1970 Quincy Jones album Gula Matari. DJ Mehdi can be seen browsing the vinyl record, possibly searching for sounds to sample.

Andrew Agutos is honored to include and paint home-state influences César Chávez, Harvey Milk and of course, Kobe Bryant, at such an important institution. This project marks a milestone in the trajectory of Jomad & Andrew's public art evolution.
